Totals (Over/Under)
A totals bet — also called over/under — is a wager on whether the combined score of both teams will be over or under a posted number. The total reflects sportsbook expectations based on offense, defense, weather, pace, and matchup history.
Example
Total: 47.5 (Over -110 / Under -110)
If you bet Over 47.5, the combined final score must be 48 or higher. Under 47.5 wins on 47 or fewer combined points. Final score 24-21 = 45 (Under wins).
Pros
- Don't need to pick a winner
- Strong correlation with weather, injuries, pace
- Live-betting totals adjust in real time
Cons
- Whole-number totals can push
- Garbage-time scoring can swing outcomes unpredictably
